The case for short breaks

A pause of a few minutes won’t fix a hard day, but it is worth more than we usually give it credit for.

When a day gets busy, breaks are the first thing to go. It feels efficient: we push through the tired patch and promise ourselves a rest later.

What the research found

In 2022 researchers pooled 22 samples and 2,335 participants to see what micro-breaks, pauses of ten minutes or less, actually do (Albulescu et al., PLOS ONE). People who took them reported feeling more vigorous and less tired. The effects were small but real. The review found no overall effect on work performance, apart from less demanding tasks, and the authors suggest that recovering from very draining work may take more than ten minutes.

That is an honest picture: a short break is about how you feel during the day. It is not a shortcut to getting more done.

How to take one

  • Leave the screen. A break spent on your phone is still a screen.
  • Move: stand up, stretch, walk to the kitchen.
  • Slow your breathing for a minute.
  • Tie the break to a moment, not a mood: the end of a call, a glass of water.

A pause you can see

The VitalRay Matrix water ritual is one way we like to mark a pause. Lay the disc beside your glass, give it 10–15 minutes, then stop and drink. It is a small appointment with yourself in the middle of the day.

The research above looked at breaks, not at our disc. We make no claim that it will make you more focused or less tired. What we offer is a physical reminder that sits on the desk and doesn’t buzz.
