A quieter desk

Most of the noise at work doesn’t come from the room. A few small changes can make a long day feel more orderly.

For many of us the desk has become the place where the whole day happens: messages, calls, documents, often lunch. Nothing about it is dramatic. It is simply a lot of small demands arriving at once, for eight hours or more, while we sit in one place.

What makes a desk loud

Usually three things. The first is interruption: every alert pulls attention somewhere else, and getting back takes longer than reading it did. The second is stillness: hours in one position. The World Health Organization advises adults to cut back on sitting, though it sets no fixed number of hours. The third is forgetting the simple things: the glass of water that stays full, the lunch eaten at the keyboard.

Four small changes

  • For one block of work, put your phone out of reach and turn alerts off.
  • Stand up between tasks. Walk to the window, refill your glass, come back.
  • Keep water in view. A full glass on the desk is its own reminder.
  • Close the day on purpose. Tidy the desk and shut the laptop, so that work has an end.

Where the disc fits

VitalRay Matrix is a small object for this part of the day: a sealed silicone disc, 53 mm across, that sits beside your laptop through long hours and goes into your bag when you leave. It has no screen, no battery and no app, so it never asks for your attention. You can use it as a marker: the disc on the desk means focused work; the disc back in your bag means work is over.

We don’t promise that it will change your day. These four habits work without it. The disc is simply a quiet thing to keep beside you while you build them.

VitalRay Matrix is a wellness product, not a medical device. Do not use it if you have a pacemaker or any other implanted medical device: the core contains a neodymium magnet. Before your first session, read Guide and safety.
